UMass Amherst is the largest public research university in New England and one of the most comprehensive educational institutions in the Northeast, with over 28,000 students and over 200 academic programmes, including highly ranked programmes in social sciences, health care, business, and computer science. There are almost 200 student organisations where students can pursue interests outside of the classroom.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst, University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Massachusetts Lowell, and the Massachusetts Medical School are among the university's five campuses. The first of the five campuses, Amherst, is well-known. This site also houses New England's largest state library.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Madeleine Blais, Nobel Laureate Craig Mello of UMass' medical school, who won the 2006 award for medicine, and novelist and National Book Award finalist Andre Dubus III of UMass Lowell, as well as former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes of UMass Amherst, are among the university's faculty.
