The University of Phoenix was founded in 1976 as a for-profit institution of higher education. Additionally, John Sperling founded the university in response to the evolving needs of the workplace. Regionally, the university is officially accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

The university, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, offers more than 100 bachelor's, certificate, associate, master's, and doctoral programmes. The university's enrollment policy is completely open. Students are required to submit a high school diploma, GED, or an equivalent for admission. In 2010, more than 600,000 students enrolled at the university, a significant increase from the previous year. The university's main campus is in Phoenix, but students participate primarily online.

School of Advanced Studies, College of Health Professions, School of Business, College of Education, School of Health Services Administration, College of Information Systems and Technology, College of Humanities and Sciences, School of Nursing, College of Social Sciences, and College of Security and Criminal Justice are among its numerous schools and colleges.
