It is a member of the Ivy League and was the first university to admit students without regard for religious connections. In the 2020 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, Brown University was ranked 14th. The university is well-known for its outstanding English language and literature, economics and econometrics, and development studies courses. In 1970, the new 'Open Curriculum' was introduced, allowing students to create their own core curriculum rather than being restricted to a liberal arts education. Brown University offers a variety of popular degrees, including economics, computer science, and biology. Through Brown's eight-year Program in Liberal Medical Education, about 50 first-year students are accepted to the Alpert Medical School.

The university's magnificent campus spans 150 acres and contains 230 structures. Students can follow their interests and participate in a variety of meaningful activities thanks to the more than 400 student clubs on campus. For the first six semesters, all students are required to reside on campus, though a small minority of juniors may be granted permission to live off campus.
