The University offers a bachelor of science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET).

The MET degree is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET. It focuses on engineering design (mechanical design), analysis, management, and manufacturing to prepare students for technical and managerial positions in a variety of industries.

Throughout the program's curriculum, emphasis is placed on computer-aided design (CAD) and its integration with other computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools or technologies. Students develop hands-on experience and technical problem-solving skill with state-of-the-art CAD/CAE technologies.

While the students focus on the design of mechanical products and systems, they also study the management aspect of engineering design, and are prepared to manage people, resources, and systems related to design and manufacturing. The program faculty has experience in both teaching and applied research in the subject areas and industry work, which contributes to the quality of a laboratory-based instruction.

Coursework includes study in the areas (and principles) of materials, applied mechanics, computer-aided drafting/design, manufacturing, experimental techniques/procedures, analysis of engineering data, machine/mechanical design/analysis, cost analysis, and automation/control systems, among others.

In addition, students complete the University's Foundational Studies Program, which provides the knowledge students need in critical thinking, leadership, and interpersonal and communication skills.

Upon successful completion of their freshman year, students participate in a Co-op Internship Program that enables students to:

  • Receive credit while employed in a position related to their major;
  • Earn a portion of their college expenses while employed in an industry for a summer or semester;
  • Learn about a company while developing professional abilities and earning college credit;
  • Choose a professional practice experience that meets their career goals from positions located throughout the United States.

The department offers small class sizes, which allow for individual attention. Coursework is centered in the University's John T. Myers Technology Center, which houses more than 20 state-of-the-art laboratories filled with up-to-date equipment and supplies.

A number of activities and organizations are available that enable students to interact with other students and professionals in the industry. These include the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME); American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); The Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE); Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP); and Epsilon Pi Tau (the international honorary for professions in technology).
