The University offers a bachelor of science (BS) in packaging engineering technology that prepares students for professional careers in packaging engineering and management.

The Packaging Engineering Technology Program combines classroom learning with hands-on experiences. Students explore the technical use of equipment to learn design techniques and to gain an understanding of management practices. The program offers a number of options for specialization, from manufacturing or mechanical technology to graphic/commercial art or marketing.

Coursework includes study in technology, business, the sciences, and mathematics—plus a cooperative work experience. Courses offer both theory and practical experience in such areas as:

  • Basic knowledge in computers including computer applications
  • Basic knowledge in the principles and theories of chemistry and physics
  • Fabrication of packages
  • Laboratory experience in packaging materials and their effect on the environment
  • Packaging machinery, materials, and test instruments
  • Planning, scheduling, and routing procedures
  • Shipping of goods including storage, warehouse operation, and testing of impact, shock, and vibration
  • Technical graphics and standards using computer-aided design
  • Work experience in industry

In addition, students complete the University's Foundational Studies Program, which provides the knowledge students need in critical thinking, leadership, and interpersonal and communication skills.

Students participate in a Co-op Internship Program, which enables them to:

  • Receive credit while employed in a position related to their major;
  • Earn a portion of their college expenses while employed in an industry for a summer or semester;
  • Learn about a company while developing professional abilities and earning college credit;
  • Choose a professional practice experience that meets their career goals from positions located throughout the United States.

Coursework is centered in the University's John T. Myers Technology Center, filled with up-to-date equipment and supplies, including a state-of-the-art packaging laboratory.

A number of activities enable students to interact with other students and professionals in the industry. These include campus chapters of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) and Epsilon Pi Tau (the international honorary for professions in technology). Benefits include opportunities to participate in local chapter monthly meetings, to be involved in state and national meetings, to attend regional and national conventions, and to qualify for scholarships and other financial grants.
