Most students accepted into a four-year professional veterinary medicine program have earned a baccalaureate degree before they enter that program. Almost all pre-veterinary students at EIU prepare for application for admission to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, since preference is given to Illinois residents.
A limited number of seats are available to non-resident students. Application is made during the fall semester of the senior year through a centralized application service (VMCAS), and a student may apply to many schools simultaneously. Acceptance to the professional school is based on the grade point average in college courses, scores on the Graduate Record Exam, letters of recommendation, and experience in the field of veterinary medicine.
