When you study social work, you learn how to help families and individuals through challenging times, including poverty, addiction, physical and mental illness, discrimination, loss, and much more. With an MSW, you could go on to work in schools, hospitals, clinics—all sorts of facilities.
To prepare you to help people take on these challenges, we've developed a program designed to make you as well-rounded as possible in the field of social work. First, you have 61 credit hours of approved coursework you need to finish in order to graduate. This will include research courses, practicums, and lectures on a wide range of subjects. We'll teach you all about important topics, such as social welfare policy, evidence-based interventions, implanting practices based on mental health diagnoses, and more. Best of all, we're going to give you real-world experience dealing with a diverse roster of clients, including families, individuals, and organizations. As part of this hands-on learning, you'll participate in clinical placements in agencies under the supervision of a master's-level social worker.
- Students have access to unique internships and resources through partnerships with the UAB School of Medicine and School of Public Health.
- The job outlook for social workers is expected to grow 16 percent between 2016 and 2026, which is much faster than average (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
